A glass cooktop can look dirty from a thin layer of grease even when there is no heavy buildup. Treating every mark as something to scrape is a mistake. First identify the cooktop type and read its care instructions. Coated glass surfaces can have different requirements from a traditional ceramic-glass top.
Begin with a cool surface
Switch all controls off and let the cooktop cool. Remove loose crumbs gently so they do not become grit under the cloth. Move cookware out of the way and inspect the glass for damage. If the surface is cracked or a mark appears to be beneath the glass, cleaning is not the solution.
Match the cleaner and tool
Use the product and pad recommended for that model. A soft cloth is a reasonable starting point for everyday film when the manual permits it. Metal scouring pads and aggressive pressure can change the surface. A scraper is appropriate only when the manufacturer allows it and with the specified tool, angle and technique.

Work in a careful sequence
- Remove loose debris from the cooled surface.
- Apply the approved cleaner as its label directs.
- Give residue the permitted working time.
- Wipe with a compatible non-scratch tool.
- Remove remaining product and dry the top.
Stubborn residue is not always removable
Burned-on spills, discoloration and scratches are different problems. Repeated scrubbing may add damage without improving the mark. If the manual’s method is not working, stop and reassess. Never assume a stronger oven chemical can be used on the cooktop just because both are parts of the same range.

Where this fits in a cleaning plan
Routine cooktop surface care and a heavily built-up restoration attempt are different scopes. Photograph unusual residue before a service visit and identify the model if possible. An accurate quote can allow extra time for agreed detail work while keeping a realistic expectation about existing wear.
